June Newsletter 2015

Welcome to this edition of On the Horizon!

RECENT NEWS:
  1. We have started a few new jobs this month, namely 75 Bay St, Double Bay, 29 Eastbourne Rd, Darling Pointand 6 Frederick St, Randwick.
  2. All our other jobs are motoring along, with 53 Village High Rd nearing completion.
  3. The office has been very busy with many new enquiries
  4. You will notice that the Project Management staff are dressing differently these days. It's part of our effort to promote our professionalism. Sites are no less important - people comment all the time how neat, tidy, and ORGANISED our sites appear to be. Perception is reality. We are also trying to lead by example with regards to PPE.
  5. These aren't the only changes in the office. We are looking at a new job forecasting system, we have purchased a new estimating system, and we are overhauling our safety system as well.
  6. We have decided that no employee shall go more than 12 months without a performance review. These reviews will provide feedback from your direct superior, as well as HH management. They will be based on your work ethic, quality of work, attitude, teamwork and passion, among other things.
  7. We will be having a staff meeting for the entire company twice a year. The first one will be in early August. Attendance is compulsory. More info to follow.
  8. At the recent Foreman's meeting, held at our Wolseley Rd project, Mates in Construction came to discuss the serious issue of Suicide Prevention in the construction industry, and the effects of anxiety and depression. If you or someone you know, at or outside work, is having a hard time, let someone know, and get help! IF YOU THINK SOMEONE COULD BE THINKING ABOUT SUICIDE, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS ACT AS IF THEY ARE.

MONTHLY QUOTE:

Instead of a quote this month, we have a light-hearted look at the Building Industry below...
QUALITY

A reminder of the six things that we’re trying to achieve out there at all times. It’s just as important the things you don’t see as the things you do. Each and every one of you contributes to our success in achieving our goal.
  1. QUALITY PEOPLE
  2. QUALITY STRUCTURES
  3. QUALITY FINISHES
  4. QUALITY PROGRAMMING
  5. QUALITY SERVICE
  6. QUALITY BUSINESS PRACTICES.
OH&S
  1. Please make sure that anyone working near machines on site (eg excavators) has a hi-vis vest on.
  2. That applies for anyone going on to the road for rubbish removal or traffic control.
  3. A reminder that Horizon Habitats has a no smoking policy indoors.
  4. Please don’t forget the two rules of safety within the company:
    1. SAFETY IS PRIORITY NUMBER ONE
    2. IF IN DOUBT, REFER RULE #1
  5. No major injuries to report of this month. Please be careful!
  6. Reminder to report any injuries to the office immediately, so that we can in turn report them to GIO within 5 days.
  7. Please make sure you have all the appropriate PPE – Boots, Glasses, Ear protection, Respirator, hat, gloves, clothing etc. If working outside, please wear long sleeves and long pants.
  8. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water, and using sunscreen, long sleeve shirt, hat etc if you are working outdoors.
  9. You all know my mantra – Everyone who comes to work goes home at the end of the day in one piece - with ten fingers and toes; lungs, eyes and ears that work the same way you came in the morning etc. That goes for all staff, sub-contractors, the general public, and even clients/architects visiting the site. SAFETY ON SITE IS ALWAYS PRIORITY NUMBER ONE.
PLANT & EQUIPMENT
  1. Another concrete saw has bitten the dust. F& K put the cause down to misuse and improper maintenance. Please clean the saws down at the end of each day, so they’re ready to use the first time you pull the cord the next day!
  2. Always ask Adrian if we have something before hiring or buying it.
  3. We are always building up our plant and equipment stocks – jackhammers, scaffold etc. Let me know if you feel like we need something else.
  4. PLEASE LOOK AFTER THEM ALL!
Employee of the Month

This month our employee of the month comes with carefully manicured mane, a tiny little "soul patch", and a great strike of the soccer ball - just ask him, he'll tell you!

Silvio Raso was poached from the Masterform Concrete stable to join the HH team at the end of 2013, leaving one uncle (John) to work with another (Robert). He has since come on in leaps and bounds in the office, all the while studying towards his degree in Construction Management at UTS - all without a single hair out of place. EVER!
