March Newsletter 2015

Welcome to this edition of What’s on the Horizon.

The year has taken off at a cracking pace! Summer is now behind us, and it is still dark when we are getting to work these days... Our hard work over the last few months has paid off, and we are looking at having another great year at HH, with lots of interesting & challenging projects on the go!

Wishing you all a happy Easter or Passover this weekend. Enjoy the time with family and friends!

We have recently made a start on a new 3-storey residence in Manly, in collaboration with Popov Bass Architects and Partridge Partners Engineers. The project will run through to April 2016, and will have many interesting features such as a curved off-form concrete facade, and Vitrocsa Windows to take advantage of the magnificent view of North Steyne and Manly surrounds. "Challenge" is a word that pops in to mind when we think about this project. It's definitely one we're up for!

We have also started work on a new high-end luxury farmstay, 1hr outside the Sydney CBD, in collaboration with Philippines-based international architecture firm Mañosa & Co. The extremely exciting project will have 5 bedrooms, as well as a large open-plan living/dining area, and a gym, theatre, & games area. Completion expected by December 2016.

We have recently completed an apartment refurbishment in Kirribilli in collaboration with Hare + Klein. The 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment in a 1950's building was completely refurbished, with new floors, ceilings, bathrooms and a kitchen, as well as custom-built joinery throughout.

Managed on a construction management basis, HH was engaged very early in the design development to advise on buildability and cost control. We were able to provide several solutions to some tricky problems of fitting the new bathrooms around the old legacy drainage when modifying the bathrooms. This saved a lot of heartache if we had waited til we got on site to try and solve!

The clients are delighted with the result."We now have an immaculate, modern apartment that is a pleasure to live in. I could not recommend Horizon Habitats more highly to anyone who is looking for a first class job that will be undertaken by first class people."

The unit has been short-listed for the upcoming Australian Interior Design Awards. Good luck Meryl & the Girls!

Choosing the right builder can make or break a project. Each month we suggest things you can ask your builder in order to differentiate between them, and help makethe right decision.

As certified MBA NSW GREEN LIVING Builders, you can ask us how we can make your next project more sustainable!

At our basic core is a company-wide commitment to reduce waste, recycle our waste when we can do so, and even re-use where possible.

Ask us how we can improve the sustainability of your next project. The earlier we can get involved, the more value we can offer in helping to make the design of your next project as energy efficient and sustainable as possible.

Some of the initiatives we can help with:

  • Green Building design
  • Sustainable and/or renewable product selections
  • Energy-efficient wall systems
  • Energy-efficient glazing
  • Shading systems
  • Insulation advice
  • Water conservation and re-use systems
  • Greywater systems
  • Hot water solutions – HWS/underfloor heating/pool heating
  • Ventilation systems
  • Solar hot water and electricity
  • Energy management systems
  • LED lighting
  • And many, many more!
We can also calculate and include in our price to make your project Carbon Neutral.

Quality homes can only be built with Quality People! This month we meet HH employee Jason Tulich. Jason joined the HH team 3 years ago after completing his degree in Building at UNSW. Starting off as a Contracts Administrator, he has helped the business develop its systems and processes, and is also now running his first major job as a Project Manager. Outside of work, Jason enjoys football and cars!

For the high-end builder comes the high-end ute! Mercedes Benz are coming out with a new utility vehicle. Should hit dealers around 2018!

A reminder about HH Maintenance & Small Works Division’s services:

  1. Routine maintenance – Monthly, Quarterly, or Annually
  2. Reactive maintenance – one off jobs

Around the Grounds - What is keeping us busy at the moment?

2015 HH Apprentice Dinner- At the beginning of each year, we take our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year apprentices out for dinner, and give them a chance to get to know each other, ask questions from the older guys, and basically give the new guys an opportunity to start to feel like part of the team. This year we went to Churrasco in Woolloomooloo.

Best regards,

David & the Horizon Habitats Team.
