Welcome to this edition of What’s on the Horizon.

David Moses Managing Director
A clean site is a safe site

Recently a supplier commented on how impressed they were with one of our building sites looking so clean and tidy. Over the years, architects and clients have also remarked on this at site meetings. My answer is always the same – “A clean site is a safe and efficient site”. If things are lying around, people can trip and hurt themselves, materials get damaged and dust gets into people’s eyes, or blows across to neighbouring properties. Further, mess creates inefficiencies.

A clean site is also an organised site, it’s a productive and efficient site. You can tell a lot about a builder by the way they maintain their site.
One of the things I urge our foremen to do regularly is sweep. Phone in one hand, and broom in the other! Why would we ask our site managers to do such a menial task? It gets them out and about the site, keeps their finger on the pulse, and their eyes on the detail. And the site gets clean, ordered and most importantly, stays safe and efficient for the work to continue.
Building wisdom

"To be something we never were, we have to do something we've never done"

Eric Greitens

This rings true to us: success, failure, consequences, independence, responsibility - these are things we all need to experience and master in order to reach our full potential.

Building icons

Have a look at this birds eye view of the marble quarries of Carrara Italy, captured by a drone. These quarries produce the most sought after marble in the world. See the video here..

Building futures

Do you have any connections, acquaintances, friends or family that you could recommend to work with us? We currently have various positions to fill on both the construction and management side, and we think you might know someone who could be a good fit for our business. If you do, please get in touch. We always prefer referrals from those we know and work with to help keep the quality of our team high.

Building creativity

Homb are green pre-fab building modules - 100 square foot triangular units that can be infinitely configured and expanded upon - and are the work of Seattle-based Method Homes and Portland-based Skylab Architecture. The modules are designed in Portland, built in Washington and shipped to sites on a convoy of trucks for assembly. The six building blocks in this house  were placed on the lot by crane - see video here. Images courtesey of Sky Lab Architecture.

Building teamwork

This month we meet Tonya Cross Payroll Manager.

When did you join the HH team?
October 2006, it's coming up to ten years!

What do you enjoy about working at HH?
While Rose Bay is beautiful, I don’t get too much opportunity to look at it … so I would have to say I work with a great team of people and have new challenges every day.

What does a typical work day involve for you?
Mostly collating all the information required to prepare the payroll each week. Charging all those hours worked to the respective jobs and various other bits and pieces.

Where in Sydney do you live?
We live in North Epping in Sydney’s North West. Our home is near the bushland of the Lane Cove National Park which we all appreciate very much.

Your favourite sporting teams and why?
I don’t follow any particular sports, but motor racing is popular at home and I am told that Ford is the only way to go – sorry all you Holden followers!

How would you describe yourself?
Busy ! I am married to Jon and we have three children, Mitchell (18), Lachlan (13) and Jacinta (11). I work for Horizon three days a week and manage the accounts for my brother’s business the other two days.

Do you have a favourite movie?
I enjoy something that makes me laugh!

What are your favourite activities to do outside of work?
Travel – we were fortunate enough to spend last Christmas on a cruise to Fiji and Noumea which was amazing. One day I would love to cruise around the Mediterranean and wake up everyday with a new destination to explore. What was the best news you ever received? Apart from the birth of my three kids, 12 months ago my brother was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour. After two surgeries, chemotherapy and travelling to Germany for stem cell treatment, last Tuesday he received a great report from his latest MRI scan – best news I’ve heard in the last 12 months!!

If you weren't in the building industry, where would we find you working?
Most likely back in the legal industry where I started as a secretary.

Sum up Horizon Habitats in a couple of words?
Family.

Building innovation

We have just signed up with CSSP's Cheops construction software that will improve the way we run our projects. Cheops is the construction Job Costing, Contract Administration and Financial Accounting software which offers an integrated accounting software solution for Building and Engineering Contractors of all types including Developers, Project Managers, Construction Managers and Specialist Sub-Contractors.

Building character

There are 20 of us doing the 'Mo' thing for Movember to raise awareness and funds to support Men’s Health in Australia. It’s something we are extremely passionate about. The state of men’s health is in crisis. Simply put, men are dying too young. So far we have raised over $11,500, plus an additional $5,000 for Mates in Construction. Please donate to our team, it's not too late.

Building community

We have formed a new partnership with the Sydney Children's Hospital. Part of that relationship gives us the opportunity to donate money to help support sick children and their families. From February 2016, we will donate one day per employee to the foundation to help make sick kids' lives a little bit easier. Other organisations which we continue to support are Maccabi Hakoah Junior Football Club, Maccabi Rugby, Mates in Construction, and various other charitable foundations.

Building relationships

"I have been with Winning Appliances now for over 11 years and during this time, Horizon Habitats have been one of my clients, so we know each other very well. Without a doubt, they are the most professional, easy to work with and well organised companies that I have had the pleasure of dealing with over the years.

I would definitely recommend them to anyone who would be considering any building project whether it be large or small".  Michael Voulgarakis Winnings Appliances.
