Welcome to this edition of What’s on the Horizon.

David Moses Managing Director
Building professionals
I bumped into an old friend recently who said they didn't envy me working in the building industry, as they are renovating their home in Leichhardt, and it's been a nightmare so far. When I asked why they didn't talk to us, she replied - "I thought you only build in the Eastern Suburbs!". This couldn't be further from the truth. But it got me thinking about a few things that people might be assuming about Horizon Habitats without really knowing the facts...
MYTH #1.“They only build in the Eastern Suburbs”
Simply because our office and a lot of our work is in the Eastern Suburbs, it doesn't mean we only work there.
We currently have projects in Manly, The Oaks, Potts Point, Mosman and in the City as well. Even one on a farm 1.5hrs drive from the CBD. Over the years we’ve worked in Palm Beach, Whale Beach, Seaforth, Northbridge, Hunters Hill, Balmain, Redfern and so on. We will build anywhere, as long as the team is right. We are currently working with teams to see if we can be involved in projects in Melbourne, Byron Bay and Manilla.

MYTH #2 “My job is too small for them”
No job is too small for us. Our Maintenance and Small Works Division complements our Construction Division, and allows us to take on small and medium sized jobs and recurring maintenance contracts.  We’re big enough to manage, and will always remain small enough to care.
MYTH #3 “They only build houses”
Alongside our regular maintenance, we have vast experience in servicing our clients in property management, office and shop fit-outs, medical suites and even a restaurant or two. We currently have three different commercial projects underway.
MYTH #4 “They’re too expensive”
Our sophisticated systems ensure we price our jobs correctly right from the start, which means we’re a much less risky option. We make sure we’ve allowed enough to manage the project efficiently, with Sydney’s best tradesmen – not to mention no unnecessary variations during the job. Often the cheapest guys turn out to be the most expensive. This is perhaps the most frustrating aspect of our industry but we remain confident that the right clients understand.
MYTH #5 “Their overheads are high, that’s why they charge so much”
Our overheads remain less than 10% of our turnover – the same or less than our smaller competitors. Our management team, staff and systems allow us to properly and professionally service our clients, designers and subcontractors in order to deliver the level of quality projects we have become known for, and to ensure we’ll be around for a long time to come. Sustainability and the enduring outcome for all stakeholders remains our focus.

Building wisdom

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

African proverb.

At Horizon Habitats we remain committed to ensuring the entire team moves in the same direction for everyone's benefit. This quote pretty much says it all.

Building icons

We worked with Hare+Klein on this compact Kirribilli apartment and these images are a testament to the inviting relaxed interior they created. Combining natural elements, textures and earthy tones, it was a real pleasure to be part of this home's transformation. Photography Jenni Hare.

“We purchased this apartment in Kirribilli that looks directly onto the harbour, and while the view was sensational, the apartments interior was not. We were referred to Horizon Habitats and Hare+Klein by a friend, who said we would get a good job, and it would be built on schedule and on budget. This all proved to be true. Nothing was ever too much for the team and we are absolutely delighted with the renovation. We now have an immaculate, modern home that is a pleasure to live in. I couldn't recommend Horizon Habitats more highly to anyone who is looking for a first class job that will be undertaken by a first class builders.”   Philip Guest, Kirribilli

Building knowledge

Our Cost Planning Seminar has now been recognised by the Australian Institute of Architects as an approved Continued Professional Development activity. Everyone who attends the Seminar obtains two CPD points to go towards the 12 needed each year to maintain an A+ accreditation.

The team from Popov Bass [below], were the latest firm to take advantage of our Seminar which covers topics including ways to get a better understanding about when and how to get builders engaged in the design and development phases of pre-construction, how to get more competitive tenders, and ways to obtain a more realistic budget and design - and better manage our clients' expectations throughout the building process.

We [check out our Movember Horizon Hero's page] are participating to raise money for men's health. And best of all, Horizon Habitats will donate double what the team raises to Mates in Construction. There will be prizes at our end of year party for whoever raises the most money and for whoever has the best Mo, so go on and give it a go, for 30 days your moustache turns you into a walking, talking billboard for men's health. If you'd like to donate to our team, please do so here.

Building relationships

We have been working with Marc Reed from Candana for many years now and we have formed a fantastic working relationship with the entire Candana team. They are a leading supplier of bathroom and kitchen ware and have been around since 1981 based in Edgecliff Road Woollahra.

"Candana have had the absolute pleasure of working with Horizon Habitats for the past nine years. During this time we have been constantly reminded of their hard-work and attention to detail. The team is not only extremely easy to deal with, their work is of the highest quality. Candana have been privileged to supply some of the most beautiful Sydney bathrooms built by Horizon Habitats and have found the process to be simple, enjoyable and effective. We gladly refer them to our clients and customers and will continue to do so." Marc Reed
